Educator Preparation Program Requirements
To earn a Bachelor of Arts in the Teaching of French degree from UIC, students must complete university, college, and department degree requirements. Refer to the Academic Catalogue for a complete list of all course requirements for the BA in the Teaching of French.
The academic requirements include:
- General education and electives coursework (61 hours)
- French coursework with the UIC Department of French (34 hours)
- Education coursework with the UIC Council on Teacher Education (25 hours).
The additional program requirements (student teaching, etc) are detailed below.
Milestones for Teacher Licensure Heading link
There are three program milestones to completing a BA in the Teaching of French major that will allow you to graduate with your Professional Educator License (PEL).
Pre-Licensure
- First, meet with an LAS advisor about required coursework. Enroll in General Education Requirement and French courses.
- Meet with the Teacher Education Coordinator and undergraduate advisor for the BA in the Teaching of French to declare a Teaching of French major.
- Take both ED 200: Education Policy Foundations and ED 210: Principles of Learning and Instruction Across the Lifespan.
Once you have done the above three tasks and completed 45-60 hours of coursework, you are ready to begin your Educator Preparation Program Milestones, which will allow you to graduate with your educator licensure in the state of Illinois.
Milestone 1: Apply for Candidacy
Milestone 1: Admission to Candidacy
There are several steps you need to take to apply to candidacy. All information about the application process for candidacy can be found at UIC’s Council on Teacher Education: click here.
Please note: Milestone 1 requirements are only accepted at specific times during the semesters (see deadlines).
Milestone 2: Apply to Student Teach
- Ensure you have been admitted to candidacy (Milestone 1).
- Finish General Education Requirements and French coursework.
- Two semesters (one year) prior to student teaching, enroll in the following courses:
– SPED 410: Exceptional Learners
– Either FRENCH 448: Foundations of Second Language Teaching or FRENCH 449: Teaching Second Language Literacy and Cultural Awareness.
- The semester immediately prior to student teaching, you must not take more than 13 hours of coursework. Enroll in the following courses:
– ED 425: Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment in the Urban Secondary Classroom
*You must submit a request to enroll in ED 425.
*When you’re enrolled in ED 425, you must not take more than 13 hours total of coursework that semester.
*For ED 425, you need a 3-hour block of time every day during the week, at the same time each day.
– Either FRENCH 448 or FRENCH 449, whichever you didn’t take last semester. You need both. - Take the Illinois Licensure Testing System’s content area test for World Languages: French. For more information, including how to register, click here. You will need to plan to take the test so that your scores will be received by UIC in time to approve your student teaching application.
- Take the French Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI). You must pass this speaking assessment at a minimum proficiency level of Advanced Low to be credited for your degree, and you must do this before you can begin student teaching. - Submit your Student Teaching application by the appropriate deadline.Remember, you must have a 3.0 GPA in your major courses and a 2.5 GPA overall in order to student teach.
Milestone 3: Initiate Licensure
Completion of all Milestone 3 requirements allows CTE to review students’ entitlement eligibility, which ultimately allows students to apply for a license and/or endorsement through the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE).
To be entitled to the Professional Educator License (PEL), all professional education and content-area coursework must be passed with a grade of “C” or higher, and student teaching coursework must be passed with a grade of “B” or higher. All coursework completed for subsequent endorsements must be passed with a grade of “C” or higher.
