Ionesco and Esslin: Theaters of War

Julia Elsky, Associate Professor of French at Loyola University, will present her research on the wartime origins of the Theater of the Absurd, with a focus on one of its most important playwrights, Eugène Ionesco, and its foundational critic, Martin Esslin. Drawing on original archival research, she will discuss how the Theater of the Absurd and the postwar scholarship on this movement are deeply informed by Ionesco’s and Esslin’s experience of migration and involvement in propaganda during the Second World War.
